Long Weekend Plans for October 2017

The Gandhi Jayanti long weekend is the perfect excuse to go on a mini vacation solo, with friends, or the entire fam bam. Because what better way to branch out and see places around you that don”t require airfare or a passport, right? To help you accomplish just that, we”ve broken down 5 perfect weekend getaways that you can consider eyes shut. Here you go!

1. Jaipur

The Gandhi Jayanti long weekend is actually the perfect time to go to a city like Jaipur for the simple reason that the weather is just divine at the time. Not too hot, not too cold and the tourist season full in bloom- it’s the place to feel alive. We recommend you to go to Amer Fort first and get on those ginormous elephants and feel a whiff of royalty. The market places are a woman’s dream (sorry boys, you will have to bear the impatience of waiting for an eternity there) but it is all worth it, we promise. The city’s palaces reflect the love for daylight, fresh air and an endless number of palace windows. Plus, Rajasthani food is a delicious mix of spicy and sweet with a side of oodles of ghee. You better book fast!

2. Nahan – Jamta

This small town in the Shivalik Hills makes for a nice long getaway from the lunacy of a big city and its traffic. During winters (December to March), the temperature ranges from 3°C to 17°C. The monsoon season starts in December and continues until the end of March with the temperature ranging from 6°C to 27°C. Many tourists flock to this place in the month of October due to Dussehra. This is a place for the adventure loving soul. Activities like trekking, mountaineering, and angling will excite you. For the rest of you laid back folks, fishing and leisurely walks are best ways to explore Nahan.

3. Rohru

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, and you can’t make any excuses because Rohru is most famous for its apple plantations. No escaping this one. It is on the banks of the Pabbar River and is about 115 km from Shimla city. It is also popular for trout fishing. Mouth watering already? Rohru can be reached via air, rail, as well as the road. The nearest airport to Rohru is the Jubbarhatti Airport at Shimla. Regular flight services of different airlines are available from New Delhi to Shimla. The weather here is pretty much moderate throughout the year and very comfortable. In winters Rohru is pretty chilly and the temperature of the place during this time ranges between 10° C and -7° C. If you happen to visit this place during winters carry heavy woolens. Make hay while the sun still shines and do not wait for winter to get here. Make use of this 2nd October Gandhi Jayanti weekend and get set to chill, literally!

4. Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is also known as Keoladeo Ghana National Park, the name being derived from an ancient Hindu temple devoted to Lord Shiva. Instead of spending time in a big metro for three days getting stuck in long eternal traffic jams, why not get out and spend time in the midst of nature and let the sounds of the forest be your lullaby to sleep? The park houses some of the rarest migratory birds that come from lands as far away as Siberia. If you have that SLR camera lying away in some cupboard, now is the time to use it! If you travel by air then Delhi and Jaipur are the nearest airports. By train, Bharatpur Junction is the closest which is only 5 kms away from the sanctuary. It is also well connected with other parts of the country by roads. You can travel by your own vehicle or take a bus, which is regularly available from Delhi, Mathura, Jaipur, and Alwar. October is a perfect time to go because it is the time of migratory birds. Don’t have an SLR? No worries, get some binoculars! The eyes are the best camera anyway!

5. Rudraprayag

If you”re after the spiritual satisfaction of the searching soul and this is the place. It is one of the most beautiful sites in Uttarakhand where two holy rivers, Alaknanda and Mandakini merge into one. The physical merging of the rivers remind you of the spiritual merging of one’s soul into the cosmos. Being one of the Panch Prayag (five confluences), of the river Alaknanda, it is an exquisite tourist destination. It is believed that the name Rudraprayag is derived from the word Rudra, which is one of the aspects of Hindu Lord Shiva. The epics state that Shiva appears here to bless Nard Muni. That is the reason why one can see lots of Shiva temples in the area. The place Rudraprayag is one of the significant destinations in char dham pilgrim yatra because it is located near Kedarnath Dham and Badrinath Temple.

There are many hotels you can set up camp at, some literally at the edge of the confluence and soak up the powerful spiritual vibrations. Some of the popular shrines you can visit around Rudraprayag include Kedarnath, KoteshwarMahadev Temple, Madmaheshwar Temple, Rudranath Temple, Guptkashi etc. Take a break; no one is ever too old or young to turn the senses towards spirituality.
